Thomas added to Senior Bowl

By Ken Sugiura

Former Georgia Tech defensive back Jemea Thomas has another significant opportunity to improve his draft standing.

Thomas was a late addition to the Senior Bowl, which begins practices Monday in preparation for the game Saturday in Mobile, Ala. Thomas was added presumably to fill out the roster following other players deciding not to play either due to injury or to protect draft position.

Thomas’ selection could be a reflection on his performance during East-West Shrine Game practices last week. Thomas will join Tech All-American Jeremiah Attaochu on the South team, which will be coached by the Jacksonville Jaguars coaching staff.

Why do SOME AJC BLOG posting sites..............show the TIME of the post........brighter than other AJC BLOGS?

Some AJC blogs make it EZ to read the time of the last post but on others it is like trying to read invisible ink.

He has definitely been one of our best defenders, hope he has great success DSJ. Damn smart Jacket!

IMO Jemea Thomas was our best tackler in 2013 by far.

Kid is durable, strong and tough.  NFL teams will like his run support skills.  It will likely come down to whether they think his cover skills are adequate for a CB.  Don't think he has the size to play safety but the rest of his skill set seems best suited to that position.

wrt to "improving" his position to 7th round draft pick, seems like many analysts believe an undrafted free agent who has interest from several teams may have a better shot a making a roster than a 7th round pick (he would have the ability to choose a team with greatest needs that fit his skillset).

In the East West game JT jarred the ball loose near goal line and his team mate ran

the ball in for a score.

D-Sheets - From what I read, Thomas did well at the Shrine game practices. I confess I am only speculating, but I can imagine that reports of his play put him on the radar of the Senior Bowl when they had an opening to fill.

Richard Sherman is gonna run BeyBey outta the NFL following the SB.

BeyBey won't catch 3 passes against Sherman.

Stanford over GT again!!

BeyBey doesn't have what it takes to compete with that guy.

......btw, Julio ran up & down the field against Sherman & his sidekick Earl Thomas in last years Playoffs.

Jamea Thomas' pick late in the 2011 Clemson game prevented a huge comeback win for them.

That comeback was greatly aided by an uncalled offsides penalty that enabled a fumble and prevented a Tech TD or FG.

Good luck in your future endeavors JT and thank you for playing for Tech.

congratulations to Thomas!

Excellent player.  he will be missed.

Derrick Morgan saved a number of game-saving plays. (prevented Clemson's QB from making a 1st down on their last drive in ACCCG)

Very few such plays like that since 2009 although there have been a number of pick sixes.

Unfortunately those pick sixes managed to keep us in games but were not enough by themselves to win them.

Had we defeated Georgia with the defense for once saving the day, which happened for Nesbitt a number of times (2009 Wake and 2009 ACCCG), I wonder if we win the bowl game with Lee staying.

Ken,

Can you elaborate on JT's performance?

Cooper Taylor is with the NY Giants and scored a TD on special teams last year after he transferred from Tech to Richmond.

I am curious why he left.

I believe his dad was a QB at Tech, Jim Bob Taylor I think.

After saving the 2008 FSU game with his fumble causing hit on the Tech 5, you would think he would be a lock for 3 more years of playing time.

I have wondered for years if Groh was the problem since he was not there for that great play.

I know he was injured but just do not get why we lose a hero then. (like now)

This blog page is about Jemea Thomas.  Let's keep it there, folks.  Go Jackets!

I am not fond of CPJ as some of u have probably noted.

However I do not see the point of going back and forth about him every day all year.

I can understand Tech folks being around and not allowing Banning or BJ to take over the blog with their daily knocks of CPJ.

I do not get you two at all.

Nothing else to do in retirement maybe?

Banning, comparing BeyBey to smith is apples to oranges. BeyBey is a much better athlete overall, stupid comparison. If you lined them up in a suicide alley who do you think would dominate the other.

JacketMan,

Has Mike Banning verified your findings yet?  Until he does we'll just have to consider JT's measureables as fabrication.

@BigCrimson75 That is the FUN........Take away Bey Bey but MANNING has so many more weapons. Every coach loos to STOP a player. Last week The OTHER THOMAS was the big play WR....this week BEY BEY was the big player.

BEY BEY is MORE than MAN ENOUGH to make plays on Sherman.

All that BEY BEY has been through do you really think Sherman can get in his head? Really? What is Sherman going to talk crap about his mom and grandma in jail? I think that has been tried since Bey Bey was like 10.

I post only as a concerned citizen for BeyBey.

That Sherman character might get in BeyBey's head & never leave!!!

@Radar123I still remember that play. The Clemson player was already in the GT backfield before the play even began. Was ridiculous.

When I looked closer at VL's play this season and last, I'm not upset at all with him leaving.   He's not a physical QB, and prerequisite #1 for the QB in PJ's O is MUST BE PHYSICAL.

On 96 carries in 2012, and very limited playing time, Vad had 9 TDs, a 5.7 ypc avg & a long run of 79 yds.

This season, as a starter & on 182 carries, Vad had just 8 TDs, a 2.8 ypc avg, and a long run of just 21 yds.  The 2.8 ypc avg and 21 yd run are the lowest of any primary QB in PJ's GT tenure.

IMO, Vad gave up trying to learn/get better in PJ's O.   I respect VL for leaving something he wasn't good at and wasn't going to improve at.

@D-Sheets He was tearing it up in practice 2 INT and 3 break-up. He was in place to make a play every time. He was never out of position and showed good closing speed providing help to other players. Check his twitter page

@Radar123

Radar, I believe he was advised by doctors it would be in his best (health) interest to stop playing football, and PJ/GT decided to err on the side of caution, and no longer play him.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, please.

LOL; this came straight from the Senior Bowl as they conducted their measurements.Der

What it basically showed is that while Jemea wasn't as physically tall as many other DB's prospects, his "reach" actually made him TALLER than most of them, and then when you added in his obvious leaping skills (note his interception against FSU's probable 6'5" 1st Round draft choice WR he made in the ACC Championship a couple of years ago), and you can see he has the ability to cover guys considered difficult even for DB's several inches "taller" than him.

I wanted to add that while Jemea's physical attributes are very similar in stature to Asante Samuel, NFL Scouts and Executives seem to be very excited about Jemea's ability to play both Corner AND Safety because of his long reach and his ability/willingness to HIT opposing ballplayers (Samuel and many Corners shy away from a lot of contact). Darrelle Revis is a cover corner who is somewhat of an exception who doesn't mind a bit of "contact," so if Jemea can show good speed in the Combine and his Pro Day, he could actually shoot up the draft board, especially if he has a good Senior Bowl.

Sherman did a passable job on Calvin when they played the Lions in 2012 - but then again, Matt Stafford was throwing the ball not Peyton Manning.

Fumble?  That player was so off sides he intercepted the snap.  Easily one of the worst "no calls I have ever seen.  Glad it didn't cost us the game.

Nice for JT!

And to think our resident kook/liar replied to my comparing JT to Morgan Burnett as "laughable".   The same word he used on my comparing Attouchu to Derrick Morgan.

@D-Sheets@Radar123 Pretty much what Paul said.  He had a heart problem so he sat after his procedure for precaution and got subsequently buried on the depth chart.  He got pissed at Johnson over lack of playing time and transferred.

PaulinNH

@D-Sheets @Radar123

Cooper Taylor received a medical redshirt after 1 game as a SO due to a rare heart problem.  He had a procedure to correct it and came back to play for GT but was injured and did not play much as a RS-SO.  He transferred to Richmond after that.

Jim Bob, Cooper's father, QB'd GT under Curry after Mike Kelly graduated.  Interesting tidbit on Jim Bob - he made the NFL as a rookie by being the kamikazi on Baltimore's kicking team.

AugustaJacket
AugustaJacket

@JacketMan I was looking at that chart you posted.  JT's wingspan is about an inch shorter than JA's, who is over 5 inches taller than him.

Those measurables do explain a good bit, but there is no measurable for heart, which JT has in spades.

Passable!!

Megatron caught 3 balls against Sherman.

This guy needs to be made an example of......unfortunately, BeyBey & Decker aren't good enough.

GTfan2013

Again, JA is a PASS RUSHER. PERIOD.  Why do you think that is the position he is playing at the Senior Bowl?  Whether he does that from the 3-4 OLB position or the 4-3 LB positon is irrelevant.  He isn't playing LB at the Senior Bowl because he is a pash rusher!!!!

I am quickly coming to the conclusion that all of your bravado about football knowledge is merely false bravado.  You have ZERO football knowledge, even less than me.  I don't claim to be any expert.  I look at things logically and draw conclusions based on that.  But I've never been a coach and haven't played since middle school.  I have opinions based on data and facts.  You have opinions that you think are facts based on your emotions.  I don't know why you get so emotional about your football knowledge (and your perception that EVERYONE else lacks knowledge).  Even in the face of NFL scouts telling you you are wrong, you still won't back down.  Comical!

Calvin Johnson, Tashard Choice, Philip Wheeler, Dawan Landry, and many other GT players who got drafted never beat UGA. I guess they all sucked huh?

@MikeBanning @GTBob That you're counting his redshirt year should provide some indication of how fundamentally flawed your comment is.

MikeBanning

How great were they if they went 0-4 vs. UGA and in the case of JT, 0-5 if you count his RS-year?

MikeBanning

@GTfan2013 @MikeBanning

OK, lets just let things play out.

Very few NFL HCs  that get canned after just one bad year want to go into a season with a 245-252lb. DE, unless that player has some sort of freakish skill that opposing NFL players cannot adjust to.

JA will have to make an NFL roster as an OLB when all is said and done.

GTfan2013
GTfan2013

@MikeBanning  This analysis is just as wrong as your analysis on Attaochu.  You think JA is a linebacker.  You spent countless words here trying convince us that no NFL team would draft him as a DE.  Here are some comments from SI on Senior Bowl:

"The early Senior Bowl plan was to use him as a defensive end, meaning more time pinning his ears back against talented linemen and less time being asked to diagnose plays from a linebacker spot. That’s exactly how most NFL teams will want to use him out of the gate, so this could be a critical week for Attaochu to really show off his wares."

GTBob
GTBob

GT was lucky to have both of them. Both were great players for us. I know it really bothers you but a lot of us fans care about the players and wish the best for them. Him getting invited to the senior bowl is a good thing, no matter how much you want to trash him for it. I've never really understood why you keep trashing every single player. You hate CPJ with a passion. That is fine. Why the need to trash the guys who play for him? Why the need to trash quality kids who give their all for GT and are just trying to succeed?

MikeBanning

@D-Sheets @POAD2013

It is laughable to compare the 2 players.MB went in the 3rd round and was slated to START as a rookie before he got hurt and has started ever  since.

No one is projecting Jemea Thomas to START in the NFL as a rookie or get drafted in the 3rd round.

What Jemea is doing in these all-Star games is moving himself from a FREE AGENT to a possible 7th round draft pick, you GT fans that are really CPJ apologists are so STARVED for something good to be associated with GT FB, that you guys are over-reacting to minor news.

I wish that GT FB had a lot more Morgan Burnett types than Jemea Thomas types.

Which player would YOU rather have if you could have only ONE of them?
