Late night for North Carolina

By Ken Sugiura

The North Carolina basketball team experienced firsthand the gridlock caused by the wintry conditions.

The Tar Heels, in town to play Georgia Tech Wednesday night, landed in Atlanta around 11 p.m. Tuesday. Rather than try to travel by bus on the gridlocked interstate, the team took MARTA to the team hotel, with the last member of the traveling party arriving at 1:45 a.m., according to the team’s Twitter account.

The game was still on as of 10:45 a.m. ACC policy dictates that a game will be played so long as both teams and officials can reach the arena safely.

GT played at AMC on January 13th, 1982 - the day after the original Snow Jam - and beat Flagler 79-71.  That was Bobby's first year.  All I had to do was walk from Hampton Street.

I am sure there will be more fans there tonight than back then.

Like the infamous Auburn greasing the train tracks episode years ago. Train slid nearly a mile past the station. Players had to unload gear and hoof it back to town only to be greeted by Auburn band in their pajamas to be serenaded for hours. Still one of the greatest college pranks.

Welcome to Atlanta, Carolina!  I hope the sirens and all the urban night sounds didn't keep y'all awake for most of the night.  We wouldn't want y'all sluggish during tonight's game.

@jquick5342 Had never heard this one. What a hoot! 'Fraid those days are long gone. Now you'd probably see the band leader fired, the school president hung, and the school fined thousands as well as the game forfeited to the visitor regardless of the score.

@jquick5342 I think that was Tulane that did that, not Auburn

Never mind.  I just looked it up and it was indeed Auburn.  My bad.

That's the only good reason not to postpone the game till Thursday.....maybe if they are sluggish, Tech can build a lead and hang on to it.  Still, I wish they would postpone it, because there is no way I'm going to try to drive up there today, and it would probably be pretty easy tomorrow.
