A possible depth chart for Tech offense

By Ken Sugiura

With spring practice a mere five weeks away – start your countdown clocks – I present my entirely unofficial Georgia Tech offensive spring tw0-deep depth chart.

WR: DeAndre Smelter                     Anthony Autry

WR: Micheal Summers                    Darren Waller

LT: Bryan Chamberlain                     Nick  Brigham

LG: Trey Braun                                    Shamire Devine

C: Thomas O’Reilly                            Freddie Burden

RG: Shaquille Mason                        Errin Joe

RT: Chase Roberts                             Chris Griffin

QB: Justin Thomas                             Tim Byerly

BB: Zach Laskey                                  Matt Connors/Broderick Snoddy

AB: Synjyn Days                                 B.J. Bostic

AB: Deon Hill                                        Charles Perkins

Some thoughts:

There’s six returning starters – Braun (8 starts in 2013) Chamberlain (7), Days (7), Mason (13) Summers (11), Smelter (8). Only four of the starters (in this projection, at any rate) are seniors – Days, Hill, Mason and Smelter.

For the purposes of the 2014 team, the injuries to offensive linemen Ray Beno and Morgan Bailey weren’t the worst thing, as they opened up playing time for Braun, Chamberlain and Roberts. Snoddy will get a look at A-back in the spring, as he did a little bit last season, and Donovan Wilson, who redshirted last year and was an A-back, will be tried at B-back.

Having Autry back from his torn ACL will be good for competition at that group. Along with Autry, Smelter, who is playing baseball this spring but will also take part in spring practice, is back and Summers has a year of experience, and that will be a push to Waller, who is headed into his senior season.

The offensive line is in desperate need of the six signees coming in (none were early enrollees). Tech will have nine scholarship offensive linemen available in the spring, two of whom did not play in 2013 (Burden and Joe) because of injury. By comparison, there’s seven scholarship A-backs, including either Wilson or Snoddy, and two more are coming in as signees (Myles Autry and Clinton Lynch).

Needless to say, an opportunity for a walk-on to make an impression on the line. (Brigham, who transferred from Maryland due to a hardship situation, is a walk-on.)

With the signees, the roster will have 15 offensive linemen and nine A-backs on scholarship by the fall. I think that’s a little shy of what coach Paul Johnson wants on the offensive line and is one more than he wants at A-back, but Autry would qualify as a player you’d take regardless of numbers at that position. The competition at A-back figures to be fierce again.

Defense on Tuesday.

If you want a good chuckle go to jawja blog about JHC and read what 75-&0% of the fans are saying about the 3 strikes and your out policy. They are saying they are at a big disadvantage because most sec schools have a 5 strikes and you are out, or worse . This kind of fan reaction is the main reason most Tech fans loath that cesspool. They never want to raise their standards, just moan that they can't be lowered...

@KenAJC The only place I could really quibble with this depth chart is having BJ Bostic and not Dennis Andrews in the two deep at A-back.  Otherwise, great job.

Justin Thomas is a very good athlete who looks like he enjoys playing football.

There are enough quality players in this two-deep roster to get the job done this fall.   I have a "sneaky" feeling that Justin Thomas may surprise a lot of folks.  He can run and throw.  I would not give up on the deep ball.  If he plays with the speed we saw glimpses of last year and confidence, things could really open up.

Smelter is very, very good. Hope Waller continues to improve.  If the QB is running the offense properly, things should open up for the backs.  Defense should continue to trend positive.  Schedule is set up about as favorably as it has ever been in a number of years.  If the players work their tails of (expected) to get ready, ANYTHING is possible... GO JACKETS!

This year should be interesting.  While not quite "hot," the temperature of PJ's seat is definitely getting warmer,  A new QB in the mix as well.  The schedule set's up nicely for GT.

As for JT, I think his ceiling might not be as high as Vad's, but his floor isn't as low, either.  Overall, he should be a better year 1 QB than Vad was this year, in terms of grasp of the offense, but you'll lose some of the vertical game that Vad was capable of.

Q.  When do you know that your football program is in big trouble?

A.  When an objective journalist covering your program states seriously, that there is great opportunity for walk-ons.

If there's 7 wins on the schedule next year, it's only because almost half of them will be against Wofford, Tulane and Georgia Southern.

I know it's not all Paul Johnson's fault.  But I'm so disappointed in Georgia Tech football.  Very sad state of affairs.

A great looking unit.

4, potentially 5 All-Americans on that depth chart.

JT is a shoe-in for a Heisman invite.

Great looking backfield. Maybe Bama & UGA have running backs of equal stature.

O-Line looks great. WR's are all game changers.

Luckily, above all else, these young men play for an all-timer in Paul Johnson.

I suppose this is what it has to look like not have your comments(truthful as they might be) eaten by the GT blog monster. You all are a confident bunch in the direction if your Program, if nothing else.

LBJ summed it up in one sentence.... the key to PJ's O that many GT/PJ haters either don't grasp or choose to ignore:

"If the QB is running the offense properly, things should open up for the backs"

Vad couldn't run the O properly, and chose the words "the TO was never really my thing"

I think JT has a better grasp of the O than Vad did.  From what I've seen he throws the ball well enough to be successful.

With you on the D ... and someone said yesterday, Clemson, Miami, and VT will have new QBs.

Guys like Smelter tic me off.  I worked my tail off and couldn't qualify to play even ONE Div-1 sport.  And the guy plays 2.  I mean, come on.  Share the talent, dude.

@Born_2_Buzz The schedule is our biggest benefactor.  VT, Miami, and Clemson all have new starting QBs.  I know we he haven't seen JT run the offense from start to finish yet, but I still think every game on this schedule is winnable.

@Birminham__Jacket Reading comprehension helps.  Ken is saying that this spring will be a chance for a walk on to make an impression.  Our OL was heavy on seniors and until the new guys get here, we won't be quite as deep on OL.  Luckily, the spring game doesn't count in the W-L ledger....

AJ.....That's a shame.

Is GT gonna improve every time y'all squall to the ajc about WnE?

Is PJ gonna become a better HC every time WnE comes back under a new alias?

Y'all got no back-bone. No wonder your Team languishes in mediocrity.

Instead of going after the problem(PJ), y'all go after GT supporters who want the Program to flourish.

It makes no sense.

Man, I just hope JT can stand all that pounding, with that small frame of his, he does have the speed, and can run the T.O.. The qb  takes a lot of hits if he holds it until the last possible second, best of luck JT. It is yours to lose.....

Me too.  I wish Vad had stayed and committed to running the TO.  With his vertical passing ability, the offense could have been devastatingly good.  As it is, I think JT will provide better results next year for us.

"Overall, he should be a better year 1 QB than Vad was this year."

I would disagree--- PJ is not inept at evaluating talent, and obviously thought VL had the best chance to win.

On the other hand, if VL wasn't truly committed and JT is and has a better mental approach, you may be correct.

Different year, same theme--- defense will be the major factor, IMO.  New QBs for Miami, VT and Clemson or not, Ga. Southern is the only team on the schedule I feel confident we should limit scoring.

@BigCrimson75

If WnE ever made any kind of constructive criticism, we wouldn't need to "squall" about him.  You refer to him as a "GT supporter";  he is in no way a "supporter" of anything to do with Tech athletics.  If he ever said one single positive thing about Tech athletics, it would be different, but the fact is, he has NEVER done that.  The blogs are better off without him.

POAD2013
POAD2013

@BigCrimson75  Many of us don't think Paul Johnson is the root of the problem.

many of those Supporters you think want The INSTITUTE to flourish are as delusional as UGa fans. The Tech fans don't understand what it will take to Change Tech football and most of the things needed are out of Tech's control.

POAD2013
POAD2013

@BigCrimson75  not much. He just got in trouble and arrested. I thought the BAMA police didn't do that to players. I thought only the police in Athens arrested football players and that FEAR of Saban kept the bama players from doing wrong.

Paul Johnson is fair game for criticism.

I don't blast GT players -- Never have. If anything, I feel they have my sympathy.

Geez.....I might be able to name 10 players on the team.

@MikeBanning @BigCrimson75  It's really not hard at all to want more from GT football yet express it in an objective and non inflammatory way. You just can't figure out how for some reason. You seem to think trashing players, coaches, and recruits non stop everyday is the best way to show you want improvement. It's not.

AugustaJacket
AugustaJacket

@Yellerbug @AugustaJacket @D-Sheets @LongBeachJacket  I understand where you are coming from, but there are two problems with that.  First, by trading QB's in and out regularly, you are bound to cause one of them to have a bad attitude.  We were fortunate in 2012 that TW was such a professional about it.  Even then, there were times on the sidelines where you could clearly see his frustration.  Secondly, splitting the first string practice reps between two QB's means neither QB gets ta full practice load with the fist string.  This is sure to impact game performance and the game rhythm.  If the QB's are constantly subbing in and out, then it's hard to establish a rhythm while running the offense..

I know I said two points, but a tertiary issue is in the recruiting arena.  QB's, like most good athletes, tend to think highly of themselves.  (Who DOESN'T want a confident QB?)  If we are subbing QB's and not allowing the Starter to play the bulk of the snaps, (95% excluding garbage time), then we probably have trouble recruiting talented guys to come in and want to run the offense.

Just my $0.02 worth, which is actually worth $0.04 if you use real copper pennies.  :)

Yellerbug

@AugustaJacket @D-Sheets@LongBeachJacket As we have debated before---I wish CPJ would have run a two-QB system: 80% Vad and 20% JT with Vad passing more---like 40% of the time.  I wish Vad would have stayed, but it is what it is and I'll be there in the  Fall cheering on the Jackets

+++++++++

That's the point I was trying to make.  Vad had more upside with his ability in the passing game, but he never mastered the base offense.  JT has a better grasp on the base offense and should be able to b more productive as a first year starter than Vad was.

@BigCrimson75  "Dee Hart has not been a part of the football team since the bowl game and has not participated in any of the off season program. Hopefully he will learn from this mistake and continue to work toward completing his degree, which he is on track to do by the summer."

The quote above is from the article POAD linked to.  Looks like he was kicked off the team.

I don't think he was kicked off the team after the Bowl game.

I believe you're thinking of Kamara.....a RB who was kicked off the team following the Bowl.

Hart was HIGHHHHH on the process going into Spring Ball however.

@GTBob @MikeBanning Good advice here for all GT BOB. Now if you, Poad,  and others here, and Dawg fans included remembered what you just said when they go to blogs of their rival school and heed what you say here then these forums would be much more informative and enjoyable.

And be OPTIMISTIC that GT might accomplish a 10 win season, not PESSIMISTIC when they don't.

99 - 12 ...... that's the score, since 2006, of UGA vs GT when it comes to signing 4/4+* 80/80+ graded recruits.  Hard to a pessimistic GT fan when the #s are overwhelmingly stacked against you.

GTBob
GTBob

@MikeBanning @GTBob Here, I will help you out with some tips.

1. Quit coming up with derogatory nicknames for players and coaches.

2. Quit trashing every single player on GTs team when a blog is written about them.

3. Quit trashing every single recruit who is even considering GT or choosing to commit to GT.

4. Actually discuss the team every once in a while. Try to come up with some meaningful dialog about the blog topic instead of another hate filled diatribe about how terrible GT is and how CPJ is the worst coach in GT history.

You can do these things and still have your opinion that CPJ isn't the right coach for GT. I promise it's possible.
