7 thoughts about Hunt-Days’ position move

By Ken Sugiura

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, college football, spring practice

Georgia Tech head football coach Paul Johnson watches over the first day of spring football practice Monday. (Curtis Compton / AJC)

In case you missed the story on myajc or in the paper this morning, Georgia Tech is trying out linebacker Jabari Hunt-Days at the rush end spot vacated by Jeremiah Attaochu. Defensive coordinator Ted Roof said he is “bouncing back and forth” between linebacker and end. Time will tell if it will work or not, but it’s worth a shot.

Photos: Georgia Tech opens spring football practice

1. There is no defensive end with significant playing experience, and this is clearly a difference-making position. It is critical to have a playmaker in that spot. Hunt-Days has the physical tools to play there, but obviously has a lot to learn. The line may prove to not be the right fit for him, but no better time than spring practice to give it a shot.

“It’s an experiment,” coach Paul Johnson said. “We’ll see how it goes.”

2. Roof started out spring practice with Hunt-Days with the first string, along with Adam Gotsis at “3 technique” defensive tackle, Shawn Green at nose and Tyler Stargel at the other end spot. Stargel could conceivably also play at rush end, as could Roderick Rook-Chungong, Nick Menocal and Chaz Cheeks or early enrollee KeShun Freeman. If one of them is the answer, there’s nothing wrong with increasing the level of competition.

Said Roof, “We’re going to reward performance.”

3. It’s conceivable that Kenderius Whitehead, who is expected to transfer in from Georgia Military College in the summer, could win the job in fall camp. But if coaches don’t have confidence in the options available in spring practice to contribute in the fall, it’s probably not wise to expect that Whitehead will come in and save the day in August.

Said Roof, “This is the time of year you want to do it because when you come out of spring ball, you want to say, ‘O.K., this is the plan for summer, this is the plan for camp. Here’s what we want your body weight to be, or whatever, because we envision you at this particular position.’”

4. A possible downside for Hunt-Days is that he could prove himself the top candidate in spring practice at end only to have Whitehead beat him out in August, which could put him in something of a musical chairs situation if roles have been concurrently set at linebacker. That said, there wouldn’t be anything wrong with having two capable options at end. Tech would likely be better off rotating the two.

5. Even if that were the case, snaps at linebacker could be relatively scarce for Hunt-Days. Roof said Monday that, for the first time in his career, he is considering the nickel defense the “base” defense. The nickel – four linemen, two linebackers, five defensive backs – is the standard alignment against offenses using three receivers, one back and one tight end. Roof said that the opposition used that configuration more than 600 times in Tech’s 765 defensive snaps.

Hunt-Days was not in the nickel last year, so his playing time dropped considerably. He had 45 tackles after having 84 in 2012 as a freshman.

“So this is a way to maybe get your best 11 guys out there,” Johnson said.

6. Again, if it proves a successful experiment, it shifts a body from a relatively deep group to a thinner one, particularly if the Jackets are typically only playing two linebackers. Quayshawn Nealy and Paul Davis are both back, and Roof touted the work of backup Tyler Marcordes.

“Going back and watching the (video) cut-ups, Tyler was really productive last year,” Roof said. ‘You look at the amount of times he affected the ball vs. the amount of reps he had, he was really productive. Every job’s open.”

7. It’s obviously been done before. Attaochu was an outside linebacker in the Al Groh 3-4 defense before moving to end. Certainly, though, it was an easier transition for Attaochu, as he mainly rushed the passer from his spot in the 3-4.

I have an 8th thought about Hunt Days and the speculation and this dilemma. Why wasn't their more emphasis on recruiting 4 or 5 star DE to come in and fill the position.   I mean you have all this talent in the state and you can't convince one guy he will be starting and getting playing time right away at the D1 level . Come on...

GTJoe admitted yesterday that he was spamming your posts.  It really must suck to be so despised that everyone spams you all the time.

Sorry.  It's not me, but feel free to keep spamming ours.  I'll keep putting mine back up.  Eventually you're going to cross the line and get banned again anyways....

@MikeBanning :  "Blame it on AugustaJacket, in order to "censor" what I write on these blogs, he instructed his stooges and cronies to flag my posts as "spam" even though they were within the AJC guidelines and  I broke no rules.

For some reason he thinks it is his cause to defend CPJ and prevent me from posting FACTS about GT FB, facts like:

1-15  vs. the Big-4 since 2010

1-3     vs. Bowl Games since  2010

A record of 2-18 in our toughest 5 games each year for the last 4 years, a PALTRY .100 winning percentage.

My best guess is that AJ thought he was being smart and then things got out of hand and in my estimation the main culprits are HighTech99 and this other pal of AJ called D-Sh**ts, those are the main guys spamming posts.

Rather than wait for KenS to remove anything over the line, they simply flag comments as spam and have them removed  themselves.

I hope this explanation helps."

See.  This is why I love debating you.  Your reading comprehension is so atrocious that you can't form a coherent argument.  I never instructed anyone to spam you.  As a matter of fact, I am probably the ONLY poster who asked people to STOP spamming you.   I did, however, encourage others to EMAIL KEN when you step out of line.  There is a huge difference, but your mental acuity apparently does not allow you to not the difference.

@MikeBanning I agree even more!

I was the first one to complain to KenS about posts getting deleted that were clearly within the AJC rules.

That meant nothing, due to the fact that AugustaJacket  riled up his cronies and stooges to spam my posts since he couldn't KenS to delete them since there were no violations of AJC guidelines.

AugustaJacket is the Wicked Witch in this instance and those that are deleting the posts are simply his "Flying monkeys" carrying out the Wicked Witch's commands.

You give me a lot of credit.  The real answer is that YOU riled up everyone on the blogs and they report your posts as SPAM.  I don't spam your posts as it is way too much fun to keep showcasing your complete lack of analytical reasoning skills and reading comprehension.

As with everything else, you constantly shift the blame to someone other than yourself for things that are YOUR fault.

JHD will shine wherever he is, on or off the field. One heck of an athlete, but an even better person.

Mulk
Mulk

The main reason for the move is that JHD cannot play linebacker - too slow.

gt51
gt51

the lack of recruiting has hurt the depth at DE more than anything.  DEs have been moved to DT because no DTs of any significance have been recruited by cpj.  on the other hand GT has enough A backs to fill 3 rosters

JacketMan
JacketMan

For those who don't remember, JHD was rated as one of the best athletes coming out of High School, with all of his physical "attributes"/measurables at the National Camps rating extremely high (I'm talking speed, strength, leaping, etc. when measured against his position).

There were discussions when he was being signed that JHD woud eventually move to Defensive End before his career ended at Tech because of those physical traits and his physical "maturity" (aging, physical growth, including putting on weight/muscle, etc.) while at Tech. Therefore, this move shouldn't be totally unexpected.

I don't think it would be outside the realm of possibility that JHD could become a clone of Osi Umenyiora with the proper training. Osi's 6'3 and 255 lbs whereas JHD's 6'3 and 249 lbs. He's also bright, and has all of the physical tools, to play that type of "hybrid" position.

I like how MikeBanning spams my posts.  I'm one of the few who bothers to debate him and he'd rather spam my posts than keep admitting defeat.

Must suck to have everyone despise you, huh?

Why all the deleted comments?  What in this article was so inflamatory?  Did someone say something negative about the AJC and its writers?   That apparently got me kicked out 'forever'. But I don't know as no one at the AJC will answer my 'why' about banning me 'forever.

Of course there are workarounds on the 'ban' and this newer format apparently didn't bring forward the 'ban' list, so here we are again.

I think these moves are indicative of good coaching.  Spring is the time to evaluate what alignment will give tech the best chance of winning later this year.  It may all go for naught, but it's definitely the right thing to do.

Thanks Ken. I know they're just getting started, but any word on Francis Kallon? I'm hoping he can contribute next season.

@Hunk  Georgia only had two 4* WDE's this year, Lorenzo Carter and Andrew Williams.  It's not like Georgia was producing tons of 4* talent at this position this year.

And this is where MikeBanning is proven wrong yet again b/c he ASSUMES so much.   I "flagged/spammed" one, yes, ONE post of his like 2 months ago, yet here he is ASSUMING that I'm "flagging/spamming" anything he posts.

Actually, I've chosen to not to waste any time/energy on him anymore.

@MikeBanning

Actually, CPJ has done a decent job recruiting interior linemen. Unfortunately we've had some bad luck.

The gets

1. Francis Kallon - 4 star recruit and is in line to play this year.

2. Shawn Green - highly touted kid who couldn't stay healthy

3. Denzel McCoy - 4 star recruit who never played due to a heart condition

4. JC Lanier - 4 star who turned out to be less than motivated to play ball

5, Adam Gotsis - unknown who has become very good

The near misses

6. Stephin Tuitt - Coming to Tech until the bag-man visited is mom and even then switched back to Tech until the second bag arrived

7. Dalvin Tomlinson - down Tech and Alabama. The lure of Saban over whelmed the lure of playing time

Of course we all want more of bigger/stronger/faster but if just a couple of the ones up there that busted hadn't, we would have been a much better defense.

This blog has to be one of the poorest "designed" I've ever seen if a poster has the ability to delete the posting of another person. This should ONLY be available to the owner of the blog because if they don't, they'll be abused, just like the trolls are trying to abuse the postings by attempting to instigate arguments and over-run the site with rubbish.

I have no problem being able to flag posts as spam, but that should NOTIFY the administrators we think the posting of our concerns, and at that point, they should evaluate the message based on our reason for considering the response is spam (we should have to explain why it's spam, not just flag it).

That's 7 guys you list over 5 years based on when Lanier came in ,that clearly is not enough depth at DL, especially when you consider we have " a gazillion a-backs" on scholly,  piled up 5-deep, while the starters at a-back only avg. 5 touches per game, and the rest rarely play.

I agree.  People should not delete other people's posts just because the disagree with them.  Ignoring is easy.

Something else I seem to have noticed is posts completely vanishing - not even a "this post has been deleted..."

Again, I ask you where you get this so-called information that AJ is "censoring" what you write or instructing anyone to spam you.  Nobody disputes the FEW facts that you actually post; it is the lies, assumptions, distortions, athlete- and coach-trashing, and overall anti-anything-Tech agenda that we dispute, and because of which you should be not censored but totally banned from these blogs

I agree with LMNOP, this is good coaching.  Need to get JHD on the field more and let him be an impact player.

We had one last year and your argument was that CTR wasn't rotating people in to build depth.  Just goes to show that all you care about is trolling.....

gt1995
gt1995

@MikeBanning @WrexNEffect

While I may not agree it would be a "better" question, that is at least one that makes a little more sense.

The answer lies in the fact that the 2010, 2011, 2012 and a good portion of the 2013 class was constructed based on a 3-4 defense rather than a 4-3 defense thus leaving the team undermanned in the WDE position. I would be more concerned if it appeared the coaching staff did not learn from past mistakes, which, based on the incoming class it appears they have given the recruits brought in specifically at that position, including getting a JUCO kid.

Given that logical yet unfortunate scenario, our DC has decided to schematically put our best football players on the field, which is EXACTLY, what a coach is SUPPOSED to do. Get the most from the available talent. Which is why making such a deal about JHD changing position is comical and even when presented with the idea that nearly 4 years ago, other respected individuals also believed this position change was at the very least a possibility.

WrexNEffect
WrexNEffect

@MikeBanning How do you know if he has instincts for the position or not if he has never played it?

gt1995

@MikeBanning @WrexNEffect

Here is information taken directly from the Rivals site when discussing JHD:

Looks like maybe YOU don't have YOUR facts in line and that there was a projection for this highly touted, athletic kid to play DE.

***

Position: Outside Linebacker

Most Impressive: Has great length, size and athleticism which will allow him to excel as a pass rusher and a cover guy. He is a very hard worker that is intelligent and loves new challenges. Look for Hunt-Days to be a leader on the field and in the locker room.

Conclusion: It may take a redshirt year for him to continue to develop as a linebacker. And don't be surprised if he grows into a weakside defensive end at the next level. Either way this high effort football player should end up being a success.

As with all your other spurious claims, my response to that, as I am sure AJ's would be is DOCUMENTATION, PLEASE.  How do you know what AJ or any other blogger has done? Did you not read AJ's post above in which he decries YOU spamming him, since HE is about the only one who posts here who is willing to argue with you anymore.  The rest of us either ignore you completely or occasionally, as I am doing now, get so fed up with seeing your name on here, that we call you out on your lies

I will answer that question when you answer mine......where is the proof that AJ has done any of the things you have blamed him for doing?  You just revel in trashing people you don't know behind their backs, just like you do anybody and anything else connected with Tech
