Interest in Jemea Thomas picking up

By Ken Sugiura

Jemea Thomas' versatility could make him a useful draft pickup.

Jemea Thomas’ versatility could make him a useful draft pickup.

Former Georgia Tech defensive back Jemea Thomas has been busy auditioning prior to the NFL draft, according to his agent. Thomas has had 11 private workouts and has been brought in for visits by four different teams, and more teams were trying to schedule visits, Kevin Conner said.

At the teams’ request, Conner declined to specify them, but Thomas posted pictures this week from the Pittsburgh Steelers’ facilities on his Facebook page.

“The kid has been extremely active,” Conner said. “The words that keep coming up are versatility, physicality and toughness.”

Earlier this week, ESPN draft expert Mel Kiper Jr. projected Thomas as a late-round pick or possible free agent, but the interest shown in him suggests that he could go earlier.

The draft will be held May 8-10.

I will always remember Jemea shutting down a Tarheel tight end. I believe that TE was a early round pick. Sorry, I can't remember the guys name. Ebron James?

Anyway, Jemea is a gamer. Best wishes Mr. Thomas! #14! Go Jackets!

I think both Thomas and Watts will get drafted---NLT 6th round each.  Both are hybrid players with lots of heart and versatility.  Both would be awesome special teams players. Watts ran a 4.4---that's cooking for a LB.  JT can play either corner, safety or nickel slot.  They both can pop you.

That's 3 players off our D getting drafted when you include Attouchou (Sneezy).  Not bad for GT.  I hope Roof can build off that---a DL, LB, DB all making the pros....get a great degree....go to school in a great city that's warm most the year.  I think CTR can build us a solid program on the D side.  I think CPJ can build us a solid program on the O side especially if he doesn't have to worry about the D.  So like all off-seasons---hope springs eternal!

Way to go Jemea Thomas.  A really good player. Should get drafted (or signed).  Should be on an NFL roster this fall.  Has a chance to develop a nice career if things break well (team, timing etc.)  Well done young man!!!

The future is bright for Jemea Thomas! It would be great if the Falcons would draft him. Good luck young man.

The Falcons should add Jemea Thomas to their roster and keep him home.

Thomas' agent has to love that photo - he looks like quite the physical specimen in it.

I hope he has an opportunity in a good situation.

Jemea can play Safety, Corner, Nickel, and Special Teams; extremely versatile and one of the top tacklers in the NCAA last season so he also doesn't shy away from contact. When he was put one-on-one with the top Tight End coming in to this year's draft, Ebron, he shut him out the second half of the game against North Carolina after Ebron ran wild against the Jackets the first half. When he covered Benjamin, the projected 1st round wide receiver from FSU, in the ACC Championship game, one-on-one, he held him to one reception for the game, for I believe three yards, and made the interception of the year against EJ Manuel, the QB for FSU, and the first round draft choice of Buffalo that season.

In other words, Jemea can cover receivers off all sizes and positions, and is also known for his run support and blitzing ability. Jemea has been compared to the 3rd round draft choice from New England from last season (another DB), so it wouldn't surprise me if he goes in the middle of the draft rather than the late rounds.
