Tech signee Johnson eager to get back on field

By Ken Sugiura

Georgia Tech incoming freshman Jalen Johnson hasn’t played in a football game since 2012. He is understandably eager to start up again.

Johnson, a safety from Oneonta, Ala., said he is “pretty much cleared” after tearing the ACL in his right knee prior to his senior season. Johnson said he can run and cut. He ran track in the spring, running a leg on his high school’s 4×400-meter relay team in May that finished third in the state in Class 4A.

“It feels good,” Johnson said. “I think it’s about 100 percent now. I feel good on it.”

Johnson and the bulk of the 2014 signing class will report to Tech Tuesday morning to begin summer orientation. They’ll take classes, join in the team’s summer workout program and prepare to begin preseason practice at the end of July.

At 6-foot-3 and 205 pounds, Johnson has good size for a defensive back and will begin at safety, he said, where he’ll be behind starters Isaiah Johnson and Jamal Golden and backups Corey Griffin and John Marvin, both redshirt freshmen. Johnson’s chances for playing time should be helped by the fact that the 4-2-5 alignment that Tech will use as its base defense often will use three safeties.

Johnson is one of three signees from the state of Alabama, along with early-enrollee quarterback Matthew Jordan (Jackson) and defensive end Tyler Merriweather (Demopolis).

The second in a series of updates on Tech’s signees.

What a boost for this kid and his family to see this article appearing in the AJC.

Wish this kid nothing but the best.

I tell ya, GT had without a doubt the best recruiting haul under PJ.

Here's another kid with star potential.

This kid actually had the frame to play S for the Tide. :)

On a personal note.....I miss SUPERSIZE but when you travel the world it is hard to post on the AJC TECH blogs...LOL

He should be in Jakarta now ans sending pics on gac bool and emails.

He asked about 1-4 GT but i have not visited 1-4 in 6 weeks. I need to visit 1-4 and see how he is doing.

Now to the topic at hand. I;m glad Johnson is feeling good being explosive in track and making football cuts.

I think ROOF is a good coach and TECH is recruiting good players for TECH on and off the field.

I hope the TECH FANS can understand winning and educating TECH MEN are equally important.

Congrat to all the new commitments and the players going to class and doing The INSTITUTE proud.

Great that tech stayed true to the scholarship offer.  not sure bama would have.

for the season to start. The O should be better with TO type quarterbacks, and I like the 4-2-5 for the D since we have been getting burned repeatedly with the pass and this should really help that situation, specially with the safeties able to roam and protect against the run as well.

@RuePaulJohnson I don't think CPJ bases his offers on whether the player has an offer from the major program in the state or not. He seems to like watching film on the kids, working them out at camps, and then making a decision. He is really weird like that.

@RuePaulJohnson

So honoring a recruit's scholarship is now somehow a bad thing?

Seriously troll, you can't be that ignorant.
