Tech 25/1 to win the ACC

By Ken Sugiura

The good news for Georgia Tech fans is that an online sportsbook thought enough of the Yellow Jackets’ chances to win the national championship this season to give them betting odds. The bad news is that those odds are 500/1, the same as Boise State, Boston College, South Florida and Central Florida, among others.

Bovada Online Sportsbook also gave Tech 25/1 odds to win the ACC, the eighth lowest (i.e., best) in the conference.

To win the Coastal Division, the odds for Tech are 15/2, tied with Duke. Miami (3/2), North Carolina (7/4) and Virginia Tech (6/1) are ahead of the Jackets and Blue Devils.

Given Tech and Virginia Tech’s historic dominance of the Coastal, Miami and North Carolina’s odds seem a little overvalued.

It is a little curious that Virginia Tech has worse odds to win the Coastal than North Carolina, but slightly better odds than the Tar Heels to win the ACC. Perhaps it means that oddsmakers believe that the Hokies would have a better chance of beating Florida State than North Carolina. Similarly, Duke has much better odds of winning the ACC than Tech, but they have the same odds of winning the Coastal. Perhaps it doesn’t mean a whole lot.

I remember a few years ago someone looked up the stats and found that Tech was one of the worst teams in the country to bet on or against (for better and for worse).  I believe it was on the website of the four-letter network.  We seemed to always win games we should have lost and lost games we should have won.  This was under Gailey.  I can't for the life of me find it anywhere now.

I'm going to bet $20 to win the division, $4 to win the conference, and $1 to win the MNC.

Duke was a one year wonder and UNC continually gets picked to finish higher than they should be.  I know preseason predictions are meaningless, but when are these "experts" going to quit buying Carolina stock and just accept the fact they, without fail, fall flat on their face every season they are expected to do something.

Ken, or someone with more time than I have see if these odds line up with recruiting rankings for the last_?_ years. I bet its real close and I bet GT's finish beats the odds most years.

Odds may as well be a million to one as long as Paul Johnson is in charge,

It will all come down to how are defense plays and the offensive line develops.

Miami is a head scratcher. But they have players. Give us fits, that's for sure.

UNC is 7/4 to win the Coastal and GT is 15/2 - meaning, according to Bovada, UNC is over 4x as likely to win the Coastal as GT.

Wonder if I can get 4-1 odds that GT will have a better ACC record than UNC?  GT plays exactly the same ACC teams as UNC this year.

I assume we can bet the reverse so put $3k against UM and $700 against UNC and win $2.4k--nearly a 70% return and much safer than the stock market.

So another $200 on Tech to win $1500 and you have a really nice New Year's eve party somewhere. Heck, throw $10 on Tech for the NC and go to church a lot. That's my betting tip and as long as UM doesn't win the Coastal, you're in the black.

The games are played on the field. I don't care what the media rates GT before the season except to rub their faces in it when we have a good season in 2014.

I'm not a Johnson hater, but I fear this might be his last campaign on the flats. Both lines decimated by injury and scholastic troubles. I think the only thing that might save him is one of these QBs becomes the star of the team. I like Byerly's toughness. If he can play like Nesbitt and gain 4 yards out of nothing every play, we might have a shot. But, I doubt we'll see anyone as tough as Nesbitt anytime soon. He was a MAN.

Johnson's going to have to learn how to recruit if Tech is ever going to get up on the porch and run with the Big Dawgs.

How does VT have better odds than UNC to win the conference but UNC has better odds than VT to win the Coastal?  You have to win the Coastal before the conference.

About right.  New QB that started behind our QB last year (who wasn't exactly super-effective) is huge.  Suspect OL and DL.  Said it once... Will say it again... It all starts up front.  If you ain't got it there, nothing else really matters.

A lot will depend on the transfer at DE who first signed at NC State and then went to Ga Military. A lot of players will need to upgrade their games to replace Thomas, Attaochu, Godhigh and Lee. Oh I forgot. The guy many claimed as the next great QB just got lucky a few games in 2012 and had no talent at all.

I agree with Ken ' s bottom line.

Every time Paul Johnson reads these types of predictions, he just chuckles.

In 2013, GA Tech finished at .500 or better for the NINETEENTH (19th) consecutive season in ACC Conference play, to extend the NATION'S longest such streak.

i think NC is the most over-valued and nc state is the most under-valued

15/2 and 25/1 are pretty respectful odds considering a new qb is being broken in.  one could argue, but the success of the team relies more heavily at the qb position at tech, than any of the other schools in the conf

I would love to know what kind of weird voodoo magic UNC and Miami use every year to convince the media they are going to be great teams.

While I might not think they will win the ACC, you can never tell.  I do thing their odds of winning the NC went down with the new playoff format instead of the old BCS game.  You can always get lucky in one game, but the odds of winning the ACC championship, followed by 2 playoff games, makes it really tough.

It's where the jugheads have us every year, and they will be wrong again.

And how is Miami favored over Louisville? Did the odds makers not watch the 2 play the bowl game last year. It wasn't even close.

GTBob

@bigmacondawg Yep, if Johnson simply out recruits every GT head coach in history by a wide margin then we might be mildly competitive with the Alabama's and FSU's of the world. Sounds simple enough. Someone send him an email asking him to do it.

Got lucky? No talent? You're on a roll, man. You're graduating through wienie's school of most hated bloggers at a rapid pace and you're even bashing players now.

@GTBob

The perception of talent--- something we don't have.  Not to mention Miami won 9 games last year.

Johnson's class last year his best. This years class perhaps better.

Still kind of silly to expect GT to recruit like UGA.

I thought the phrase was "get OFF the porch and run with the big dogs"....

Correct me if I am wrong (and I know I am not), but GT has beaten FSU 2 out of the past 3 meetings and we had a chance in the 3rd one at the end.  Granted that we had Nesbitt, Dwyer and D. Thomas for those first two but the margin in game 3 was not that wide.  I think a few decent recruiting classes should be enough with the offensive scheme.

Like the USC Trojans -- Miami and UNC are about to start feeling the effect of their scholarship restrictions to depth.  Great first strings but depth issues will kick in, plus the recent Mia guys getting booted from team.  Everybody forgets that Gailey left GT as probation kicked in for the 1st years of CPJ's tenure.  The effect wasn't in the first two years, but more so in the recent 3yrs.  The restrictions are now gone and we should see an upswing for GT in quality depth as Mia and UNC start downswinging.  CPJ will never get 5 stars and lots of 4s but if he gets a decent amount of 4s and 3s we should see more 8, 9, maybe 10 win seasons.

@Birmingham__Jacket Miami lost 4 of their last 6 games by 18 points or more. They weren't even mildly competitive in their bowl game. I'm fine with them getting better odds than GT but 3/2 odds to win a division they have never won, coming off a laughable end to last season is beyond generous. The UNC odds are just a complete joke. Personally im not that upset that GT isn't overrated every year. It would just cause guys like you to complain even more.

GTBob

@Birmingham__Jacket GT isn't enough of a media darling to ever be overrated. Even if we had a coach who really really likes passing.

We snuck into the polls week 1 and 2 early in at least 2005 and 2007.
