Draftee Spingola will return to Tech

By Ken Sugiura

Tech center fielder Daniel Spingola will put off professional baseball and return for his senior season. Spingola, who led the Yellow Jackets in batting average (.319), runs (45), hits (82), slugging percentage (.451) and stolen bases (15 in 16 attempts), was drafted in the 24th round by the Chicago Cubs in the major league baseball draft.

Friday is the deadline for teams to sign draftees. Spingola is Tech’s only underclassman taken in the draft who will return. Pitchers Sam Clay (Minnesota Twins), Josh Heddinger (Detroit Tigers) and Matthew Grimes (Baltimore Orioles) all signed contracts.

With the return of Spingola, who came to Tech as a preferred walk-on from Marist, 10 of the 11 players with the most at-bats in 2014 will be back.

24th round is terrible and no decision whatsoever. If he had gone pro he would have been a fool. Almost no money signing in the 24th round. Smart move to stay at GT and enjoy the college life a little longer......and hopefully get a degree.

I think it's a good decision to come back, but being drafted in the 24th round is not terrible. If you do a little research you would be surprised to see what the numbers look like when comparing this that make it to the majors when broken down by rounds.

Btw there are 40 round so this would be a 3rd or 4th round pick if it were football.

Go Jackets!!!

Not necessarily. With the way MLB has set up the slotting system, late round picks may just have signability concerns. The best players don't always go at the top of the draft.
