Tech hires new communications director

By Ken Sugiura

Georgia Tech has hired its new assistant athletic director for communications and public relations. The athletic department announced on Wednesday the hiring of Chris Yandle, who previously held a similar position at Miami.

“There is no doubt that Chris is one of the most progressive and creative minds in communications and social media strategy at the collegiate level,” athletic director Mike Bobinski said in a statement.  “We were very aware of, and impressed by, the great work Chris was doing at Miami and are extremely excited to welcome him and his family to Georgia Tech. I’m confident that everyone who follows the Yellow Jackets will notice and enjoy the impact Chris will have on the quality and content of our communications in the years ahead.”

Yandle was promoted to the assistant AD position last year after joining Miami’s staff in 2012. He was the primary contact for the Hurricanes football team, a role he will also fill at Tech. He was given the Rising Star Award by the College Sports Information Directors of America this year. He is also co-writing a college textbook on social media plans in sports.

He is scheduled to begin the week of Aug. 4. Yandle replaces Dean Buchan, who held the position from 2007 until June.

Must have been tough covering up all of the scandals at Miami so no surprise he would leave

I wish Mr. Yandle nothing but the best.

Looks like an excellent hire for the Jackets.

He was around some excellent PR work accomplished by the U since Coach Golden arrived as well as the U looking better than the NC2A in the Shapiro schenanighans.

Always thought Mr. Buchan(who may very well be a great person) was not very productive at his job.

I was hoping we would get former DT  Darryl Richard

But Clemson hired him as Assistant Director of Business Operations

Best PR athletic department at Georgia Tech can do is beat UGA and bring some sort of parity to rival. Make a young football star think, just even for a day or two about going to Georgia Tech and not UGA.

No excuses. Just win the darn game.

@Birmingham__Jacket That would be great, but its never going to happen. However, improving our relationships with the media, improving our presence on social media, improving our branding, etc. are pretty reasonable goals that could be achieved. This guy sounds like a good one. Hopefully he improves things.

@juvenal I think things will be fine. I liked working with Dean, and I trust it'll be the same with Chris.
