Butker clutch on camp’s first day

By Ken Sugiura

Georgia Tech kicker Harrison Butker made sure that the first day of preseason camp ended well. Coach Paul Johnson put Butker to the test Thursday, giving him the chance to reduce the team’s conditioning drills based on five field-goal tries.

Butker made all five of his attempts, the longest from 52 yards, setting off a frenzied celebration recorded on video for the Tech website. As teammates mob Butker, A-back Synjyn Days screams into the camera, “We’re going to Charlotte!”

Butker was 10-for-14 last season as a true freshman, including 5-for-7 between 40 and 49 yards. In July, return specialist Jamal Golden predicted that Butker will “get us a game or two.” Thursday, he got off to a pretty good start.

If Butker can average 5 extra points per game, this might be a great year. 4 per game, good year. 3, meh (to steal Kens word).

Good kicker..  Solid..  Hopefully, we can score some TD's to keep that leg of his busy.  :)

The kid is a great kid, student and kicker. I hope he can handle the pressure of some big kicks to win us games over the next 3 years.

After the offseason we have had, its kind of nice to see kids out there just having fun. Thats what amateur football should be about anyways.

Glad to see the players excited about the season.  " GO JACKETS "

Glad he was 5 of 5 but would've like to have seen the players celebrate, then a few players take the initiative to do the conditioning drills any way to set an example and a tone for the camp...

Maybe cpj wont go for a fourth and long at the 35+ yard line.

Awesome!  Hope he can hit consistently from 52-yds this season = 6+ additional points per game = 2 additional wins.... great to have that in the arsenal....

@GTBob Bobby I wanted to update you on my wife's hip replacement...GT Grad and former football player Dr. Jeff Davis (Andrew's in Bham)did a great job with Little Missy and she is doing fine. She tends to walk backwards but I told Jeff I  would mount a rear view mirror on her and she would be fine.

@Jim70 CP had to do that because we didn't have a kicker that could make the kicks longer than that. having the right QB a 4th and 4 or less is very makeable for the Jackets.

@POAD2014 @Jim70 Of course he didn't have to go for it. There's a thing called a punt. But he does this in games when he's outcoached and the TO isn't working. Which is a lot against the big 4 teams on the schedule. With unc and duke much improved and uva no doubt better, this will be a ugly year for gt football.

I see a 5-7 record as probable. 4-8 if they lose to GSU which could happen.

@nevrenuftime @POAD2014 @Jim70 Never fails another so called fan that is just wishing the worse for CPJ and these fine student athletes. Look what CPJ has done inside the conference. Every year we have went into the last week with a chance to be coastal champs and he is getting the most of his players academically. CPJ does deserve a little credit. I give him a lot. He did his best coaching with the his youngest teams. Also, no matter who you are to have an outstanding year you have to have the ball bounce the right way sometimes regardless how the teams play. Remember Auburn last year. Chances are they are in for a shock this season. Rarely do you have a year like that 2 years in a row. We have had some years like that in both Football and Basketball. It takes some luck as well as hard work and great play. Nuff said! Go Jackets!
