Among the last cuts for their respective teams, former Georgia Tech stars Isaiah Johnson and Zach Laskey did not wait long to get another chance.
Both were signed to the practice squads of the teams that they’d gone to training camp with, Johnson with the Detroit Lions and Laskey with the St. Louis Rams.
“There were other teams that called about adding him, but it really made sense to stay in Detroit,” said Lance Courtney, Johnson’s Atlanta-based agent. “We chose Detroit for certain reasons and those things haven’t changed. He’s in the right place.”
As practice-squad members, Johnson and Laskey are eligible to be signed by any other team to an active roster. It is not a secure position. Teams often release and sign players to their practice squads on a weekly basis.
Still, for both, it’s an accomplishment after being signed as undrafted free agents. Of the 12 undrafted free agents signed by the Lions after the draft, one made the active roster, and Johnson was one of two to stick as a practice-squad member.
Of the Rams’ 15 undrafted free agents, three made the roster and Laskey was one of five to make the practice squad.
“The goal is to be playing on Sundays,” Courtney said. “He’ll get there.”
